The announcement of the 2017 International Blue Flag results revealed that a total of 44 South African beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status this year, along with seven marinas and eleven sustainable tourism boats.

The Western Cape has achieved the highest number of Blue Flag sites, with 28 of the beaches, all eleven boats and six of the seven Blue Flag marinas falling in the province.

Plettenberg Bay has received Blue Flag status for six beaches during the 2017/18 season. This includes Robberg 5 (9th year), Keurboomstrand (7th year), Nature’s Valley (6th year), Lookout (4th year), The Dunes (2nd year) and the newest to join Blue Flag status is The Singing Kettle beach.

Applications for the prestigious Blue Flag eco-label were reviewed earlier this year and put through a rigorous approval process involving both national and international assessments. Offshore Adventures has received Blue Flag status

Offshore Adventures has added to Plett’s outstanding marine experiences with both of their boats, Robberg Express and Oceanic Express, receiving Blue Flag status for the year.

“We are honored to have another beach awarded Blue Flag Status for 2017/2018 and to receive the same accolade for two of Offshore Adventure’s boats. The beaches and water-based activities are two very important components of our tourism strategy.

The addition of these awards are testament that all role-players involved with beach development and marine activities are committed and understand the key role that tourism plays in our community,” says Plett Tourism Media Manager Patty Butterworth.

Blue Flag is the prestigious, voluntary eco-label for beaches, boats and marinas that is recognised as a trusted symbol of quality and is regarded by the World Tourism Organisation as the most well-known global eco-label.

The Blue Flag Programme, which has been running internationally since 1987, is focused on the conservation of marine and coastal habitats, and is designed to raise environmental education and awareness, and increase sound environmental practices among tourists, local populations and beach management. To achieve Blue Flag status, as many as 33 different criteria spanning over four aspects of coastal management have to be met: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services.

The criteria are asset by the international coordinators of the Blue Flag campaign in Europe, the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). Each Blue Flag site is compelled to conduct several environmental education activities during the year, and to practice effective and efficient conservation management. The detailed criteria and award process is available on Blue Flag’s international website www.blueflag.global. – THE GREMLIN

HOW ARE THE NATIONAL LOTTERIES COMMISSION HELPING
TO UPLIFT EMERGING TALENT?HOW ARE THE NATIONAL LOTTERIES COMMISSION HELPING
TO UPLIFT EMERGING TALENT?

Tshisa Talent have discovered some great talent within the communities in the Knysna Plett area over the past 5 years and are now empowering the deserving to take control so that they can achieve greater career success.

It is one thing to be ‘discovered’ however what does it take to become truly successful? Is overnight success a myth or is it possible? What does it take to stand out head and shoulders above the crowd? Who must we rely on to make a success of our chosen career?

Tshisa Talent have discovered some exciting talent through the Competitions that they have held in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna over the past five years. The obvious next step is to add even more value so that artists are empowered to take ownership of their own careers.

Those who have already demonstrated that they are self-starters who have committed to uplifting themselves were invited to a special Career Development Workshop held at Ingwe in The Crags over the weekend of 7 October 2017. As team leader, Mncedisi Ncedani said, “We will receive not what we idly wish for, but what we justly earn.

Our rewards are always in proportion to the effort we invest. It is the same with any dream of a career in the performing arts.”

The vital topics of Goals and Financing your career were covered by Stuart Palmer. Two accomplished facilitators, Lamise Inglis from Ikasi Media and Ebrahiem Inglis from EB Music enlightened attendees on the subjects of rights, royalties, brand management and social media marketing – which proved to be very pertinent and popular. This was followed by a session to uncover the delegates’ Wish Lists which, not surprisingly, included assistance on recording albums and DVDs and branding through clothing identities. Tshisa Talent will continue to provide assistance to make the artistes dreams come true. As hip-hop dancer, Enrico Sam said, “I now know what to do to make a success of my talent.”

Those who attended were awarded with Attendance Certificates and will be embarking on two exciting Tshisa Roadshows. On the weekend of 2nd December, they will be headed towards Riversdale and on 9 December they will be touring to Humansdorp.

Tshisa Talent would like to thank National Lotteries Commission for funding this Career Development Workshop. We would also like to, once again, thank all those local companies who offer their ongoing support without which the Tshisa Talent Competitions would not have been possible. Please like our Facebook page so that you can follow the progress of these young emerging artists and perhaps consider offering them a performance platform to develop their skills even further this Season?
